Suns have a trade deadline subplot nobody is talking about

The Phoenix Suns would be crazy to disrupt what they've got going on and make any trade deadline moves, but that doesn't mean that they won't do it anyway.

They already have too many players on this roster that they unfortunately cannot bring back next season, while Grayson Allen in particular looks like the ideal candidate to move on from.

Suns can offer to be third team in trades and pick up assets

But what the organization should be doing right now is working the phones to let everybody else know that they will help facilitate any potential deals, as long as they get something out of it as well.

Allen is making over $16 million this season, an ideal number when you're trying to cobble together salaries for bigger players to be traded.

This also assumes everybody involved is not beyond either apron, a situation the Suns themselves were in when Kevin Durant was in town, which seriously hindered their ability to make trades.

Anthony Davis and Trae Young are the two names we are hearing daily who are likely to be moved in the coming weeks. We also could not be less enthusiastic about "Ice Trae" heading to The Valley.

But the potential to steal a draft pick or younger player from the Atlanta Hawks if they are desperate to acquire Davis and need a third team to get the deal over the line should interest Phoenix.

It is the stuff of fantasy to believe the Suns could extract former first overall pick Zaccharie Risacher from Atlanta, but right now he is heavily rumored to be available.

What about a more realistic target such as Caleb Houstan? Hardly a marquee name, but perhaps the kind of player head coach Jordan Ott can work with?

He's already gotten the best out of everybody from Jamaree Bouyea to Isaiah Livers, so taking a swing on a player like Houstan when there is no risk involved seems like a smart move.

Even if it is not the Hawks or Dallas Mavericks, the Suns look like a trade partner who can help others get where they need to go. If they can recoup some of their long ago lost draft capital in the process, all the better.

General Manager Brian Gregory does not yet have a reputation as somebody you don't do business with for fear of looking silly, but he's had a brilliant run since getting the job.

Getting involved at the trade deadline in a small way that does not upset the chemistry in Phoenix would be the next step on the road to become one of the most respected GMs in the league today.
