The Phoenix Suns might have been hit with injury to their two best offensive players in Devin Booker and Jalen Green, but we know they are not the type of group to complain about bad luck striking them again.
Instead they will turn to others to help guide them until they get back to full strength, and few have the opportunity currently presented to them than center Mark Williams to prove he can be the answer to so many of their problems.
Williams has chance to prove he is worth large extension this offseason
Getting the former Charlotte Hornet on the court as consistently as the Suns have has meant that trading for him in the first place was already a win, particularly given he has appeared in a handful of back-to-backs.
But with Williams eligible for an extension this offseason, if he can take on an even greater offensive load then he’s going to ensure he is paid the most amount of money the franchise can offer.
The emergence from Oso Ighodaro has been GREAT for the Phoenix Suns this season.

However, they need to find a way to make him and Mark Williams better coexist offensively ⬇️ pic.twitter.com/bpMgrdIEQM
Also helping his case is the weird place the market sits as we move towards the deadline. Superstar bigs such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Davis linked with moves away from their current teams, although nothing has yet to happen and this is holding up Phoenix’s ability to make other trades themselves.
There’s a clear need for dominant bigs throughout the league once more, while there is a shortage of the kind who can have an impact on a winning team. It is why Bismack Biyombo still finds himself with a job down in Texas.
Williams should and will get more touches, so it would be nice to see him chip in with 15 points and 10 boards each night. Modest increases on the 12 points and 8.2 boards he has managed to this point. Defensively you couldn’t fault him, with the Suns sitting seventh (112.1) in defensive rating as he anchors the side.
It would be fair to say that Williams doesn’t have a consistent offensive game or a go-to move outside of just being a bully around the rim, as well as being a lob threat, but now is the time to change that.
We’re not going to see him posted on block 90s style, but a little bit more back to the basket and initiating an offensive action himself would go a long way.
Williams is never going to be an offensive fulcrum for the Suns when everybody is healthy. He is also going to get paid regardless this summer and the Suns should be thrilled with what they’ve seen from him to this point.
But if Collin Gillespie can continue to take these opportunities to impress when they present themselves, there is no reason a former Duke player with the physical attributes of Williams who is now healthy can’t do the same. A massive chance.
