The Phoenix Suns need any win they can get, however small, in the wake of leaks coming out of their locker room that the team is unhappy with the lack of a true point guard to organize the offense. Ja Morant could have been that guy and made a ton of sense for the franchise to pursue this offseason, but the fact that he is set to miss some time out with a hamstring injury is why the Suns were right to avoid him.
Morant no longer durable enough to lead Suns through regular season
Morant is expected to miss at least four weeks with a hamstring strain, according to Shams Charania of ESPN, and had that occurred while he was in a Suns' uniform, their nightmare would only be beginning now. That's if playing alongside Miles Bridges would have worked in the first place, and there are zero guarantees that the Suns would have been any better than being the worst team in the league defensively that they already are if that were the case.

The Suns would surely have had to part with Jalen Green in order to land Morant, and although Head Coach Jordan Ott sticking with him as a lead playmaker is wrong, he is a former second overall pick who is capable of scoring in bunches in a hurry. No Morant for a month with Green in Memphis would have meant Devin Booker and Collin Gillespie in the backcourt.
Which sounds great in theory, and it is what fans have been crying out for, only defensively, that duo would give up a ton of points, especially with Bridges as part of that starting five. With Oso Ighodaro also currently sidelined and Khaman Maluach facing a brutal learning curve, the Suns would be in an even worse spot than they currently occupy.
Suns still need a Morant type of guard to save their season
Morant hasn't played 10 or more games consecutively since 2023, as this handy little account likes to remind people, which rightly would have made trading for him a risk. But that doesn't change the fact that the Suns need a new face in the backcourt to help reverse their fortunes.
Dejounte Murray looks like the imperfect solution at this moment, and the fact that he plays for the New Orleans Pelicans and a front office prone to baffling decisions means the Suns may yet be able to land him at a discount price. Morant would have been the fun and popular choice, and he would have generated a lot of buzz. But this injury is a timely reminder that not moving for him was the right thing to do.
