The Phoenix Suns have limped out of the gates to a 1-2 start, and the last thing this group needed was locker-room unrest being leaked by the media. That’s exactly what unfolded on Thursday, with NBA Insider Chris Haynes revealing that there is “some growing frustration within that locker room for the simple fact that that roster does not have a point guard that can organize that offense”. It’s been three games.
Suns need to address point guard issue and stop leaks ASAP
This is a mess all of the organization’s own making. They haven’t put a floor general next to Devin Booker in the backcourt since moving on from Chris Paul, and at this point the flawed prospect of enquiring about Dejounte Murray has created an irrational level of excitement amongst fans. When you’re starving for high-level play at the point, you will talk yourself into anything. Murray would be a sideways move, but would at least be better than the Tyus Jones experience.

The Suns learned nothing from that disaster, instead trying to cobble together a backup rotation featuring capable players like Jordan Goodwin and Collin Gillespie, who both know that whatever they do, it will not be good enough to dislodge Jalen Green from the starting lineup. Both are great role players who have a place on this roster, but the Suns are in critical territory with their reluctance to give Booker the type of player that he has thrived alongside in the past.
This is also a huge concern because Booker-led teams have never typically leaked information like this to the media. Last season featured good vibes and a togetherness that took the league by surprise, and to see that shift so suddenly with much the same group means there is real unrest in Phoenix. It is also the kind of challenge that Head Coach Jordan Ott has never faced before, and how he responds will be crucial.
Suns can’t trade their way out of worst problem this decade
It cannot be overstated how much of a crisis this unrest, hitting the media barely a week into the new season, actually is. The front office can’t trade their way out of their predicament either; Miles Bridges’ value has only trended down during his brief stint with the team, while Dillon Brooks has come down to earth.
It says it all that Oso Ighodaro is as valuable to the Suns as he has quickly become. Nice as that is for him personally, the franchise can’t have a second-round pick mean this much to them if they’re trying to win a playoff series.
The only way out is to finally move on from Booker, right as he is about to turn 30. A path owner Mat Ishbia promised he would never take, but off-court drama and media leaks have never been his style. That could be what pushes him towards the exit door, and the sad part is, fans wouldn’t even blame him at this point.
