If there is one franchise in a worse situation moving forward than the Phoenix Suns, it is certainly the Golden State Warriors. They have botched the tail end of Stephen Curry's prime in San Francisco by failing to surround the guard with proper talent. One such move that has derailed their pursuit was snatching Jimmy Butler from the Suns, opening the door for Phoenix to acquire Dillon Brooks, who looks like he will be an essential cog in Phoenix for years to come.
Warriors in desperate need of Dillon Brooks to kickstart team
It can now be said with confidence that the Warriors need the exact player in Dillon Brooks whom the Suns just locked down to a three-year, $73 million extension. It's excellent value for a guy who may yet be an All-Star and is also firmly in his prime, having just turned in a career year.
Having Brooks on your roster ensures that every regular season game is one the team cares about. He was also the best player on the court for the Suns in their surprise playoff appearance versus the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Warriors do have their own version of him in Draymond Green, but he's too old at 36 and, frankly, has been too successful to care the same way Brooks does each night. There may come a time when Golden State inquires about trading for the Canadian international, as he has proven he would be the perfect forward to pair next to Curry (and even Green) for another postseason run.
We've got much bigger plans for Brooks if he ever is traded.
Brooks ironically ended up being everything Jimmy Butler could have
The NBA has a funny way of shaking out, and if you cast your mind back over a year, Phoenix was desperate to land Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline to play the role that Brooks currently does. He instead ended up with the Warriors, where he played as advertised before unfortunately tearing his ACL.
Butler is an older and more expensive version of Brooks that the Warriors are now stuck with, whereas the Suns have a 30-year-old who has both changed the culture and could be used in a future trade to get Booker more help.
There's a reason why ensuring Brooks was brought back early was the best piece of business the Suns could have done this summer, and he will continue to look like the short-term solution to winning more games for a struggling organization like the Warriors.
He means much more than that to the Suns.
