After taking care of their own players throughout most of the offseason, the burning question for the Phoenix Suns was whether they would extend Dillon Brooks to give themselves a head start ahead of next summer. They just made their feelings on the forward clear, with ESPN's Shams Charania saying that the Suns have handed their glue guy a three-year extension worth $73 million.
In a sea of moves this summer, this one was perhaps the most important for the Suns to complete, given just how important the wing was to the team last season.

Suns keep their tone-setter in town
Brooks immediately made a strong impression after being acquired by the Suns last year. The hard-nosed forward has always been known for his fierce edge, bringing a swagger to the court that made his presence felt at all times, and that was the case in Phoenix. He was a culture-setter for the Suns, making sure that everyone was always on their toes and giving it their all.
Of course, antics and attitude alone won't get a player paid. Brooks backed it up with productivity, posting the best year of his career statistically. While he spent time banged up, Brooks averaged a career-best 20.2 points per game to go with 3.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and one steal per game. He was arguably Phoenix's second-best player behind Devin Booker.
Brooks alone wasn't responsible for the Suns ranking ninth in defensive rating in the regular season, but he certainly played a part. The All-Defensive honoree is one of the best wing defenders playing today, and it was on full display with the defense. He can continue to spearhead this defense and lead by example every single night.
Suns other moves are not on this level
Phoenix has made it clear that they are fine with largely running it back. Outside of their splashes for Miles Bridges and Luke Kennard, the Suns have focused on keeping internal talent, handing deals to Collin Gillespie, Mark Williams, and Jordan Goodwin. While all important in their own right, none of them can hold a candle to extending Brooks.
While he was under contract for another season, his expiring deal would have hung over this team all season long had the Suns not extended Brooks. There would have been endless speculation about his future, which could have been a distraction. Now, not only do the Suns squash that chatter, but they also secure arguably their second-best player. Win-win.
In an offseason full of quality transactions, this should go down as the best.
