The Phoenix Suns have preached continuity and long-term roster building since being burned so badly by Kevin Durant (we're not forgetting about you either, Bradley Beal). To this point, they have largely kept to their word, extending a handful of players this summer. Yet, the opportunity to trade for a star player, just like when they landed KD, should pop up sooner or later. They will be ready.
Brooks extension puts Suns in position to again trade for a superstar
The belief around the league is that the Suns traded for Miles Bridges to give him an extension, and when that happens, it will put the organization in an interesting spot. A combination of Bridges and Dillon Brooks (or even Jalen Green on his current deal) matches up to a lot of stars out there salary- wise. If the team wants to make a splash, they will have the assets.
Last season was fun because the Suns won 45 games and unexpectedly made the playoffs, but regression is never too far away with how competitive the league is. Let's see how into the experience fans are if this team struggles to make the Play-In and Bridges isn't the offensive solution at the four he is being lauded as.
With Devin Booker approaching his 30th birthday and the Suns battling a long title drought as they desperately try to even get back to the NBA Finals, the temptation to go all in for a superstar again now that the Suns have the capacity to do so is exciting. Every year, one or two big players ask out, and that tradition should continue.
Suns should be wary in repeating history of failed Durant trade
When those star players do become available, the Suns need to remember how badly things ended with Durant in town and all the dreadful solutions they tried to come up with on the fly to fix it. Jusuf Nurkic was among the worst, while the second apron, which has stung the Suns in the past, still exists. They don't need to get trapped once again.
Brooks is their culture-setter and could yet be an All-Star, and as we now know, you don't just give that up for a bigger name. Even the Houston Rockets know this after how last season ended for them.
Opportunities are going to appear in the next couple of years, and when they do, the Suns need to think long and hard about actually doing a deal. They need to build this roster smartly rather than just chasing big names. That's how they ended up with Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal.
