Phoenix Suns Las Vegas Summer League Player impressions
By Alex Vairo
After being called up to the Suns from the then D-League in mid-February, Derrick Jones Jr. became a fan favorite in Phoenix. His electrifying dunks and blocks helped keep the fan base excited throughout a season of tanking.
Like Marquese, Jones Jr. appears to have put on more weight, allowing him to finish with more force at the hoop. Another improvement has been Jones’s three-point stroke. It does not appear to be as mechanical compared to last season. Jones Jr. continues to fill the lanes well and is always out in front when the Suns are in transition.
With all of these developments, one area where Derrick continues to struggle with is his ball-handling and shot creating abilities. He is dependent on others to create for him on offense. This relegates Jones Jr. to the corner or forces him to be in constant motion. Here’s to hoping that Jones Jr. will continue to improve in these areas as the year progresses.
