Conclusion
Cameron Payne’s court vision and passing ability would be a welcome addition to a Suns team that needs to improve when it comes to moving the ball. He’d have to get a lot stronger to be able to hold his own against the league’s more physical guards, and he’d need to develop a consistent three-point shot.
However, Payne is an intelligent, pure point guard option and shouldn’t be ruled out entirely just because everybody’s sick of the failed point guard hydra experiment. After all, if the Suns don’t take him at No. 13, the Oklahoma City Thunder may get yet another draft steal by taking him at No. 14.
Payne doesn’t fit the typical profile when it comes to Phoenix’s love for combo guards, nor does he address the team’s biggest area of need. But if McDonough feels he is the best player available when the Suns make their first round pick, don’t be surprised to see yet another point guard added to the roster.
