Conclusion
Kaminsky may not have a particularly high ceiling, but he’s ready to play NOW despite being a 22-year-old rookie. He would immediately bolster Phoenix’s frontline with some much needed depth and perimeter shooting.
Is he a home run pick? Not necessarily. But at No. 13, the Suns might not have a home run pick available anyway. On a related note, we should consider that the Indiana Pacers or Utah Jazz could be interested in him and take him off the board at No. 11 or No. 12.
But if he is still available and the Suns like what they see, this team badly needs backup options at power forward and center. Kaminsky might be capable of filling either one on a game-by-game basis. He’ll never be a star, but the Suns probably aren’t finding a bonafide star in this draft anyway.
Other options like Kevon Looney, Bobby Portis, Trey Lyles and Myles Turner are tantalizing as well in terms of power forwards and centers who can rebound and spread the floor. Kaminsky’s slow feet on defense and his lower ceiling are possible deterrents from the Suns drafting Kaminsky, and they certainly are valid.
But if Phoenix wants a mix of rebounding, playmaking, intelligence and three-point shooting who can contribute from day one, Frank the Tank might be their best option.
