The Phoenix Suns continue to believe Devin Booker can work as a primary ball-handler and creator, despite clear evidence that he works better alongside a true point guard. The Suns are doubling down once more on this approach this offseason, when they should take a page out of the Minnesota Timberwolves' playbook and keep their star p at his natural spot.
Timberwolves delivered LaMelo Ball to Anthony Edwards for same reason
Over in Minnesota, Edwards has also been asked to be the primary ball-handler in the past, to mixed results. The Timberwolves have made a pair of Western Conference Finals with their own franchise cornerstone running the show, thanks to Mike Conley Jr. aging and breaking down.
They remedied the situation by adding LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets, a rival the Suns have completed four trades with since December of 2025 alone. They could have picked up the phone and inquired about Ball if they'd wanted to. Instead, they gave up so much for Miles Bridges, who will soon be looking for an extension after Dillon Brooks was taken care of.
Ball himself wasn't the solution in The Valley, but that is not the point. The Timberwolves understood that they were using one of the best scorers in the league the wrong way and changed course. The Suns, despite overwhelming evidence, refuse to do the same.
For a front office so proactive in pivoting away from the Kevin Durant era (and doing a surprisingly nice job of it), this is a blind spot that continues to hold them back. Booker is at his best when he is being fed the ball and being asked to score in volume; it is why he worked so well with Chris Paul.
Suns risk alienating Booker with refusal to add true point guard
If the Suns don't fix this problem soon, Booker is going to go the way of Damian Lillard and want to look elsewhere without ever coming out and saying as much. Imagine another team could offer him what Edwards now has: a better chance to contend while he plays his natural position.
It is great that Phoenix now has Collin Gillespie, Jordan Goodwin, and even Pat Spencer on this roster. But none of those players will replace Jalen Green in the starting lineup to allow Booker to shift to the two spot anytime soon.
