The Phoenix Suns have had their struggles in recent seasons, but one thing they absolutely got right was finding and developing Collin Gillespie.
The point guard spending plenty of time in the G League, before taking his chance last season and being one of the team's best players. Bringing him back this offseason a no-brainer.
Suns may have next Gillespie in undrafted Sam Hoiberg
The franchise appear to have repeated the trick by bringing in Nebraska guard Sam Hoiberg ahead of next season. The Suns got their guy in Koa Peat (no workout required for that one), and going down the hard-nosed, undrafted route once more at the guard position makes a ton of sense.
Hoiberg is going to spend time in the G League, and at the rate the franchise has stacked up backcourt players he may never seen the court in the NBA.
But Gillespie is the blueprint to success that he can follow, and defensive-minded guards are exactly what head coach Jordan Ott loves to have on his rosters. It is why Gillespie is so valuable to the Suns, while Jordan Goodwin also has a similar profile, albeit in a bigger frame.
Speaking to Sam Hoiberg the other day, he informed me that his Australian visa had yet to be cleared, and was going to pursue the NBA and/or G-League.

"Australia is certainly an option down the road, would definitely love to play there"
It is now being reported he will be… https://t.co/qKFosUwB9J
Point guard is an area in which Phoenix has struggled since Chris Paul's departure, and there is no escaping the fact the team looks better when they have a true floor general alongside Devin Booker. That does bring up uncomfortable questions about the future of Jalen Green, but Hoiberg is galaxies away from having to worry about that.
For now he has been given a chance to stick in the league by a franchise that now has a track record of turning players in his position into NBA contributors. Gillespie just got paid to return to The Valley as well, another fact that is surely not lost on Hoiberg.
The Suns were always going to bring in some undrafted guys ahead of Summer League and with an eye to having their two-way contracts filled, and Hoiberg may be long gone by the time the season starts.
But his addition is right in line with what the organization is looking for, and gives player and team the opportunity to get the best out of one another. The prospect of him teeing up Khaman Maluach and Rasheer Fleming during Summer League is an exciting one Suns fans to look forward to, as they continue trying to add quality around the fringes of their roster.
