The Phoenix Suns were not active on night two of the NBA Draft, having gotten business done early by moving into the first round and taking Koa Peat 30th overall.
The Arizona player staying in state to continue his career, which likely signals the end of the road for Ryan Dunn in The Valley.
John Gambadoro reveals Suns never worked out Peat prior to draft
With the Suns moving into the top half of the draft so late in the day, insider and Arizona Sports presenter John Gambadoro revealed that the franchise never properly worked out Peat. Rather once it looked like they might be able to move up to get him, they got him into the building to take a late look at him.
Interesting nugget here. The Suns did NOT workout Koa Peat because of where they were picking in the second round. But once they felt like they had a chance - albeit a small one to get into the first round - they were able to get him to come into the building on Sunday for a…

We won't know for a while yet, but the eagerness to draft Peat is either going to look like a stroke of genius or appear very silly.
General Manager Brian Gregory has not put a foot wrong since getting the job a year ago, and alongside the front office their desire to go after Peat means they must feel he can be a part of their future.
Owner Mat Ishbia has also spoken in the past about how all areas of the organization are now aligned, and their commitment to Peat reflects that. If he becomes a contributor, and at 19-years-old it is going to take time that Devin Booker perhaps does not have, then it will only confirm the Suns really are excellent at identifying talent.
If it goes the other way and Peat ends up like Dunn, and there are worrying similarities already with the lack of a consistent jump shot both possess, then not getting him in for a proper workout will be used against Gregory and company for years to come.
Especially with the Suns giving up what little second rounders they had left to get a deal done. They must have done their homework on the prospect, and helping Arizona to a first Final Four appearance since 2001 surely factored into their decision making.
There will be time spent in the G League and the learning curve will be brutal, but the franchise nailed both the Toumani Camara and Oso Ighodaro selections in the last few years. They were both second round picks, but the desire by the team to put themselves in position to draft Peat means he will be a success. Right?
