As the NBA trade deadline approaches and a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade becomes more likely, the Phoenix Suns are sitting idly by until that massive piece of business goes down.

They are rumored to be interested in a power forward if the right one becomes available, and we've got a wild suggestion, but until Giannis moves the Suns won't do anything.

Timberwolves enter race to sign Antetokounmpo

You know it is a big deal when Marc Stein and Jake Fischer combine to give us an update on all of the goings on around the NBA, and they did just that Thursday with the latest on Giannis.

Tucked into that piece was the surprising reveal that the Minnesota Timberwolves should be taken seriously as a landing spot for Giannis, as the idea of playing alongside Anthony Edwards supposedly appeals to him.

Oh dear.

Why should the Suns be worried about this? Because it is exactly the kind of move that punishes a franchise trying to build slowing in that the Timberwolves would extend their window in the West and be another difficult obstacle for the Suns to overcome.

Prior to both Devin Booker and Jalen Green going down with injury, we put forward the idea that the Suns and Timberwolves could actually meet again in the postseason as soon as this year.

The Timberwolves would still be favored, but that was further proof that trading away Kevin Durant and getting deeper and hungrier as a group was the right thing to do.

That goes out the window if Giannis heads to Minnesota, and they would join the Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets way out in front of the Suns. There is also the Denver Nuggets to consider as well.

You can see now why owner Mat Ishbia made the trade for Durant, and also Bradley Beal, when he did. Stars win you championships, the only problem is Phoenix backed the wrong ones to achieve this.

Antetokounmpo is anything but, and it would blow the carefully laid plans of the Suns out of the water. Mark Williams has been a great story, while Collin Gillespie is one of the most improved players in the league.

Green could have another leap in him while Dillon Brooks changed the entire culture in The Valley overnight. Booker remains elite, while head coach Jordan Ott is a brilliant long-term addition.

Only if the Timberwolves get Giannis, none of that matters and they will have a better shot at contention across the rest of the decade than the Suns. A potential diaster.
