Suns rumored to be considering ridiculous roster change

Why would they do this?

The front office of the Phoenix Suns have been busy this offseason - and now that Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal have left the building - attentions have turned to filling out the remaining roster and its needs with the players available to them. The franchise doing a nice job in the last week of attempting to fix their obvious point guard problem.

Although Ben Simmons was rumored to be a potential solution - and he most certainly would not have been - the Suns instead made the smart choice to sign two cheap point guards in Jordan Goodwin and Jared Butler. The likely thought process here being that both would battle it out to secure a spot in the rotation during training camp.

Suns considering using Jalen Green as point guard.

One roster move that nobody saw coming - and which does not even make sense - was the prospect of turning new Sun and borderline elite scorer Jalen Green into a floor general. Yet according to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports - who it has to be noted has been on the money on several Suns topics so far this offseason - that is exactly what they might be considering.

Already the front office had mentally prepared Suns fans for the prospect of Devin Booker once again picking up that mantle, which has always seemed like a poor use of his incredible offensive skills. Perhaps putting Green in this spot instead is the lesser of two evils - it allows Booker to get back to what he does best - but it is far from a perfect solution.

Gambadoro did also point out in a later tweet that when Fred VanVleet was out for the Houston Rockets last season, Green took on more playmaking responsibilities and performed them admirably. But he's only 23-years-old and hasn't shown much of an interest in being anything other than a pure scorer in the past.

Coming at this from another angle and perhaps the time to try this kind of thing is right now. The Suns aren't going anywhere and it could unlock something in Green for the long-term. But if this doesn't work and the franchise switches back to Booker at the point or then tries to sign another veteran guard - we know what owner Mat Ishbia is like - what then?

This feels like accepting that the fit between Booker and Green is clunky, and that the two will never be able to co-exist on the same roster properly. It would also suggest Goodwin might not be sticking around for long either, despite the fact he looks like an ideal fit. It is better than bringing in Simmons or Russell Westbrook to be sure, but that is also a low bar to clear. A puzzling decision if true.
