After calling time on a very busy 2025 NBA Draft that saw them bring in much-ballyhooed names like Khaman Malauch, Rasheer Fleming, and Koby Brea, the Phoenix Suns wasted no time in agreeing to terms with a pair of undrafted free agents who have eyes on trying to stick on Phoenix's roster.
The Suns agreed to a two-way contract with Appalachian State power forward CJ Huntley just seconds after the Draft came to a close. Huntley's signing, paired with another name Phoenix is bringing into the fold, shows that Phoenix is taking gambles on scoring upside after a defense-heavy draft.
Phoenix also brought former Drake shooting guard Mitch Mascari in to work with their Summer League team. Mascari was a valuable member of a very deep Bulldogs team last season, and the Suns will try to see if he could be worth adding to their developmental pipeline.
Suns add CJ Huntley, Mitch Mascari after NBA Draft
A 6-11 power forward who played five seasons with the Mountaineers, Huntley averaged 15.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game last year. Huntley has a smooth finishing touch and the potential to be a solid stretch power forward, but he must overcome limited defense and concerns about having only one year of solid production.
Mascari is exclusively a 3-point specialist, as he had better efficiency on 3-point shots (40% on over six attempts per game) than he did from the field overall (39% on seven attempts per game). The defense and athleticism are subpar, but that smooth shooting stroke is what got Phoenix interested.
Huntley's two-way deal could help him get some minutes at the end of the bench, even amid what is now a very crowded Suns frontcourt. Mascari, meanwhile, will need to show enough to get the G League Valley Suns interested in working on his overall game.
Phoenix was widely praised for the haul of young talent they picked up in 2025, showing that the front office has officially pivoted hard from trying to chase stars and is more than comfortable with trying to slowly bring their young players along.
