The Phoenix Suns aren't likely to make any big moves this offseason, although if they want to get ahead of a Dillon Brooks extension they might just be forced into action.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is a name that many Suns fans would love to have linked with their team, but that is not going to happen. Instead it is his teammate Bobby Portis who could yet end up in The Valley.
Portis makes sense for Phoenix and situation to land him is now right
The 31-year-old is obviously a huge step down in quality compared to his Greek superstar teammate, but he is a realistic trade target for the Suns and could help them in the short-term whether Brooks sticks around or not.
Much like Aaron Gordon, Portis just feels like a Suns player and would play a position of need for the franchise. They need veteran forwards to throw at opponents next season in their quest to get bigger depending on who they are facing, and Portis could answer that call while also bringing championship experience with him.
He is hardly a name to make Devin Booker believe that he can contend again soon, but much like the Brooks addition last summer, building a winner takes time. There are no home runs to make this work, and Portis represents another logical step.
Really it is the potential to add him as part of a sign-and-trade with center Mark Williams that should intrigue the most. The Bucks weren't mentioned as a recent landing spot for the former Charlotte Hornet, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen.
Particularly with Myles Turner continuing to say all of the wrong things while with that franchise.
The potential to move on from Williams and add a player in Portis who the Suns know they could flip down the road if required has to be enticing.
Coming at it from the perspective of not wanting to offer Brooks an extension, and he would represent a short-term solution to that problem as well. Head coach Jordan Ott leaned on experience to make the playoffs in year one, and he is going to need more of that for the Suns to stay relevant.
Portis is not the sexy pick and adding him wouldn't move the needle either. But it also makes sense no matter what way you look at it for Phoenix to exploring adding him this offseason.
