3 Suns who are pointless to have on 2024-25 roster

Hard to see why they're even in The Valley.

Despite being miles into the second apron and having a top-heavy roster, the Phoenix Suns actually have some sneaky depth heading into the 2024-25 season. The additions of guys like Tyus Jones and Mason Plumlee helping to pad out the middle of the rotation.

With most of last season's top performers back in The Valley - with perhaps the notable exception of Eric Gordon - the Suns are going to try and improve on the 49 regular season games they won last time out. If Bradley Beal can remain healthy and Devin Booker takes another leap, that could definitely happen for this team.

But it's unclear why these three players are still in Phoenix.

Call in sentimentality - or perhaps just an inability to shift some of these guys - but they're not going to get a look in this season. The roster would have to be decimated by injuries for any of them to get a regular spot on even the second unit, and so for now they look like they're taking up a valuable roster spot.

3. Damion Lee

Don't hate on us, we've already looked at the pros of having Damion Lee in Phoenix this coming season. He's familiar with Booker and only missed out last campaign because of a meniscus injury that required surgery. There were certainly occasions when he could have been used last season as well.

But with Jones and Monte Morris now on board - plus Booker, Beal, Grayson Allen and Royce O'Neale - where exactly does Lee fit into the equation? He's not a natural ball-handler so he can't even play point guard minutes, while he's not as good a 3-point shooter as Allen or O'Neale.

This means he's going to fall through the cracks, and get used sparingly at the start of the season. Once the rotations settle and assuming guys remain healthy, Lee is quickly going to become the odd man out. Which is a shame given he's liked by the fans and in the past has had some nice monents with the team.

This being the last year's of Lee's current deal - a minimum contract - don't be surprised if he's on the move. Failing that and if the franchise once again get suckered in by the buyout market that always promises so much but rarely delivers, it could be Lee who is waived to make room for the next over the hill veteran, who also won't play nearly as much as we think.

2. Josh Okogie

In theory Josh Okogie still has some value to this roster. The problem with that is Okogie no longer has a guaranteed spot in the rotation, because offensively he can only give you so much and on the defensive end - where he is without doubt more impactful - he has failed to take the necessary steps to stick with the Suns.

This might seem confusing given he started on opening night as recently as last season, and the organization gave him a new contract this summer. But that was surely done with the idea of trading him when they can down the road, so as to get a player in who can actually help this roster win games.

Okogie has decent size for a wing, but he's not nearly elite enough to shut down the top scorers in the league at that position. He's just the latest Torrey Craig/Jae Crowder clone for this version of the Suns. Guys who it is nice to have - but as soon as they're no longer in Phoenix - they are quickly forgotten about.

The Suns have Okogie right now so that they can trade him, so he may get some minutes early in the season to put himself in the shop window. Whether or not another team shows interest, he's going to get buried on the bench come the turn of the year, when the sprint to the playoffs will take over.

1. Bol Bol

Truly the definition of a player who is a luxury, Bol Bol is not going to get many chances to impress this coming season. It made sense going back to the Suns - the fit there is better than anywhere else in the league - and he did manage to somehow gain the trust of former head coach Frank Vogel last season, despite being a horrendous defender.

The thought process now being that the new leading man in Mike Budenholzer may just find a spot for him offensively. But everybody knows at this stage that if Bol has an actual, important role on your roster, then you're not going very far. Yes he's nice to throw out there for three minute blocks to take a 3-pointer and handle the ball some.

He also appears to be the nicest, most genuine guy you could ever hope to meet, and fans all around the league want to see him succeed. But he's a sieve defensively who gets picked on, while on the other end the Suns just have too many mouths to feed to feature Bol all that often. If they didn't then he would actually have a home here.

As things stand Allen - the leading 3-point shooter in the entire league last season - is at best the fourth option offensively. Jones might do a wonderful job setting everybody up, but you can't take shots from Booker, Beal, Allen and Kevin Durant, and instead direct them towards the enigmatic Bol. We'd all love to see it happen, but his spot on this roster will appear a waste come the playoffs.
