Throughout his first few months of leading the charge for the Phoenix Suns, newly promoted General Manager Brian Gregory has made some highly questionable decisions.

From potentially creating the league's next superteam via the historic Kevin Durant trade to getting absolutely screwed by the Bradley Beal buyout, it's undeniable that Phoenix has unequivocally had one of the worst offseasons compared to all other 29 teams scattered across the association.

What's most frightening of all, however, is that Gregory might not be done with his bizarre activities, as recent reports suggest the Suns are on the shortlist for one of the game's most polarizing free agents still available on the open market.

Suns one of top free agency choices for former All-Star Ben Simmons

According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, Phoenix is believed to be one of the top free agent landing spots for former All-Star Ben Simmons, with the NBA insider noting that he's expected to make his decision "in the next week."

Clearly, with Tyus Jones now in Orlando and their expected focal points being Booker and newcomer Jalen Green, the Suns are in need of a point guard who can effectively run an offense and get players open looks for scoring opportunities.

While Simmons certainly has a track record of dropping highlight reel dimes and boasts averages of 7.2 assists per game for his career, looking to him as the answer to their floor general vacancy has the potential of becoming an unmitigated disaster.

Sure, his resume does consist of top-shelf achievements like three All-Star selections and an All-NBA nod, but the former number one overall pick has been far from producing at these types of levels for years now.

Since his top-12 MVP finish back in 2020-21, Simmons has found himself posting role player-esque averages of 5.9 points, 5.8 assists, and 5.8 rebounds while suiting up for 108 out of a potential total of 328 regular season games.

Though the allure of possibly becoming the team to pull the 29-year-old out of his multi-year rut and help reestablish him as a star in this league may be enticing, it's crucial to understand that both the Brooklyn Nets and LA Clippers attempted such a feat with the guard already -- look how that turned out.

Now, while some may say that the Suns taking a swing on his upside at a minimum cost alone could be worth signing Simmons, when taking a quick glance at the current crop of point guard still available in free agency (Malcolm Brogdon, Russell Westbrook, etc.) there's a case to be made that there are several preferable options to target over the former number one pick.

Although there may be a legitimate interest in seeing this particular pairing become a reality, for the sake of both Phoenix and their fan base, it's likely best for the organization to steer clear of this kind of signing.
