The Phoenix Suns expect Tyus Jones to walk in free agency this summer, and the Kings are rumored to be interested. Sacramento needs a point guard after trading De’Aaron Fox and could give into Jones’ desire to start.
The 6’1 guard spent just one season with the Suns. He signed a minimum contract last summer to start in Phoenix. He averaged 10.2 points, 5.3 assists, 2.4 rebounds, and 0.9 steals in 26.8 minutes per game. Jones was eventually benched as the Suns searched for answers. They shockingly missed the playoffs as the fit was just never there.
The signing was a disaster, and the Suns are expected to move on. They thought his low turnovers and ball control would help unlock their offense, but it never happened. Now, Jones is searching for a new home.
Tyus Jones may sign with the Kings
Sacramento is exploring their options at point guard, and Jones is one of the best names available in free agency. Things didn’t work in Phoenix, but the 29-year-old was one of the best backup guards in the NBA during his time in Memphis. Jones needs the right fit to fully unlock his game.
The Kings are loaded with offensive talent and expected to make moves this summer. They cannot play Jones, Malik Monk, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Domantas Sabonis on the floor together. Keegan Murray offers two-way ability, but that is too many players who need the ball in the top six of any rotation. Expect Sacramento to move at least one of their current talents if they bring in a point guard.
Tyus Jones is a 40-plus percent 3-point shooter who doesn’t turn the ball over. There is plenty to get excited about for Kings fans. They are still upset about letting Tyrese Haliburton and De’Aaron Fox go, but it is time to move on. Jones would be a fine stopgap option as the Kings search for their long-term answer.
The Phoenix Suns are expected to be active and aggressive in reshaping their roster after missing the playoffs for the first time since the bubble. Kevin Durant will be traded before the draft and more pieces will go out the door. Phoenix wants to get more athleticism on their squad around Devin Booker. It will be easier said than done with their financial restrictions, but change is necessary.
Do not expect to see Tyus Jones back. The Kings are interested and others may join the party as free agency draws closer. Keep an eye on where he lands.
