On Tuesday's episode of the Burns & Gambo Show, John Gambadoro said that Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant "could have some interest" in being traded to the Spurs.
In February, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported that San Antonio was one of the teams that had "mutual interest" in Durant before the deadline. The Spurs made a major splash before the deadline by acquiring De'Aaron Fox, but they still have the draft assets to make a run at another star.
The writing has been on the wall that Phoenix would trade Durant this offseason. The Suns listened to offers for him before the deadline, which came as a surprise to KD. There was a deal in place with the Warriors, but Durant nixed it because, as he later said, he didn't want to be traded midseason.
Phoenix's offseason began with the firing of Mike Budenholzer and the promotion of Brian Gregory to general manager. The next move will be to choose a new head coach, with the two finalists being Jordan Ott and Johnnie Bryant. After Mat Ishbia makes that decision, attention should shift to a KD trade.
Kevin Durant might be interested in trade to Spurs
There has been some doubt that a Durant trade would occur, especially since Giannis Antetokounmpo hasn't yet decided on his future. If he requests a trade, it would affect the Durant sweepstakes.
Phoenix's most realistic path to building back the assets it lost and gaining some financial flexibility is a KD trade. If the Spurs are interested in Durant, that'd be a dream come true for the Suns. Phoenix would be happy to accept a package from San Antonio that includes assets and key players who could help the Suns become somewhat of a threat next season.
From Durant's perspective, he'd be a big boost to helping the Spurs compete for a title. Why wouldn't he want to play with Victor Wembanyama? Everyone does. San Antonio has yet to secure a playoff berth since drafting Wemby with the No. 1 overall pick in 2023, but that trend could shift as soon as next season. The Spurs could've been a Play-In Tournament team this past season, but Wembanyama missed the second half of the season with a blood clot.
San Antonio has the No. 2 pick in the draft, meaning there is more top young talent on the way to the Spurs. No, Phoenix won't be able to get that pick, but San Antonio also holds the No. 14 pick, which could be traded to the Suns.
Keep an eye on the Spurs. The Durant trade saga is just beginning, and it could conclude before the draft, which is only three weeks away.
