If we know two things about the Phoenix Suns this offseason, it was that they were getting their business done early (check) and not be drawn out of their long-term vision by trading for a star (double-check).
Which made the random intel drop from Michael Scotto of Hoopshype not too long ago that claimed the Suns had done some homework behind the scenes on Josh Giddey of the Chicago Bulls all the more surprising.
LaMelo Ball heading West should have Suns thinking about Giddey again
There's an obvious reason why Phoenix would be interested in the 23-year-old, the fit next to Devin Booker would work and not since Chris Paul have they had a proper floor general next to their franchise cornerstone.
But with Ball heading to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a sizeable haul (depending on how you feel about pick swaps), the Suns need to return to the idea of Giddey. The Timberwolves are several levels above the Suns when it comes to contending, but even they have realized that you need a high level creator to win.
Even if getting one who has never appeared in the playoffs at the expense of Naz Reid is a massive risk. The Suns are seriously lacking in creativity too, with Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin more thought of as defensive-minded and more stable table setters.
Both lack that "je ne sais quoi" that Ball, whether you like to admit it or not, certainly possesses.
It is not like going after Giddey would be a departure on owner Mat Ishbia's insistence that there will be no shortcuts and trading for stars. The Australian has tons of potential but has never even made an All-Star team, and the franchise wouldn't have to go "all in" to acquire him either.
Rather he looks like the next level in building a winner, and although Booker has never given any indication he is unhappy, the proactive approach of Minnesota to keep Anthony Edwards onside must be frustrating to watch.
Obviously the Suns tried (and failed spectacularly) to do this when they landed Kevin Durant, but Giddey fits the timeline, player profile and skill level while the Suns would be dealing with a franchise in the Bulls who are used to fumbling talent and making baffling decisions.
It would be the latest feather in the cap of General Manager Brian Gregory, while the Suns can't let another Western Conference rival get out of sight. Giddey can be their answer to Ball, and he wouldn't cost nearly as much either.
