The Phoenix Suns will enter the NBA Draft, and free agency that follows it, with several roster needs that they will have to address in order to continue building around Devin Booker.
Adding a true point guard would appear to be high on that list, and many believe the franchise will use the 47th pick (assuming they don't move up) to take a true floor general who can set the table for years to come.
Jalen Green is stopping Suns from building ideal roster
But as long as Green is in Phoenix, the Suns will be unable to give a true point guard the minutes and starting position needed to truly blossom. We've seen the best version of Devin Booker for this team come when he had an actual floor general in Chris Paul alongside him in the backcourt.
Paul is one of the best to ever do it, but since his departure the franchise has moved away from a formula that works. Getting an elite point guard is hard, but the Suns haven't even given themselves the opportunity to do so and see what that looks like.
If anything Green shares more traits with Bradley Beal (and we do not mean that in a disrespectful way as he is clearly the better player at this point) in that they are score first guards who look to get themselves going.
If anything Beal was the better and more willing passer than Green, and that is a problem.
Bringing Collin Gillespie back makes sense and staggering his minutes to play alongside Booker looks the smart move as well, but that creates further issues with Green. You can play him some with the bench as their go to scorer, but he is too good currently to come off the bench.
Being a sixth man or microwave from the pine feels like where Green's career will ultimately end up, but we are not there yet. The Suns need to continue showcasing him in hopes that another organization is interested in trading for him as well.
As long as he is in Phoenix, the Suns can draft, trade or outright sign as many point guards as they'd like. The fit just won't work. They already had Gillespie, Jordan Goodwin and Jamaree Bouyea on the roster last season, and at times all three of these players did enough to warrant more minutes.
Only when Green was healthy, that was not the case. There is a solution to this problem in bringing Green off the bench, but it doesn't look like anybody is ready to go there on this topic yet.
