Devin Booker may still be No. 1 in the hearts of Phoenix Suns fans, but he’ll no longer be wearing No. 1 on the court.
The franchise’s all-time leading scorer will change his jersey number next season to No. 15 to honor his father, Melvin Booker, according to multiple media reports.
Melvin wore No. 15 while playing collegiately at Missouri from 1990-1994.
It also won’t be the first time the younger Booker has worn No. 15. Book suited up wearing his dad’s digits during the Olympics for Team USA in 2024 in Paris and 2020 in Tokyo (which actually took place in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Booker took home back-to-back gold medals with Team USA in those games.
Which Phoenix Suns players have worn No. 15?
You don’t have to go back very far to find another Suns player who’s worn No. 15.
Center Mark Williams, who was acquired via trade from the Charlotte Hornets last summer, wore No. 15 throughout his first season in The Valley. Williams is now a restricted free agent who may not return. Perhaps his number being poached is yet another signal in that direction.
But Williams wasn’t the first Suns player to sport No. 15. Jalen Bridges, who played just eight games for Phoenix in 2024-25, wore the number before Williams. Before Bridges, Cameron Payne wore No. 15 for the Suns from 2019-2023.
The best Suns player to have worn No. 15 ahead of Book was Danny Manning. The former Kansas Jayhawk was a two-time All-Star before making his way to Phoenix, where he won the league’s Sixth Man of the Year Award in 1998.
Here’s the full list of Suns players who’ve worn No. 15:
- Michael Holton (1985-86)
- Sedric Toney (1986)
- Steve Burtt (1992)
- Danny Manning (1995-1999)
- Daniel Santiago (2001)
- Vinny Del Negro (2002)
- Cezary Trybanski (2004)
- Josh Davis (2006)
- Nikoloz Tskitishvili (2006)
- Robin Lopez (2009-12)
- Marcus Morris (2013-15)
- Alan Williams (2016-18)
- Ryan Anderson (2019)
- Cam Payne (2020-2023)
- Jalen Bridges (2025)
- Mark Williams (2026)
It will be a new era in The Valley for Book, who’s taking a page from Kobe Bryant’s book by changing his number.
Suns fans can only hope Booker will get at least as many NBA Finals appearances wearing No. 15 as he did while wearing No. 1.
