The Phoenix Suns enter the NBA’s 2021 free agency period with one task standing above all else: bringing back Chris Paul. As the driving force behind their return to the NBA playoffs and eventual Western Conference conquest, the Suns need the man deemed “Point God” next year like a fish needs water.
They certainly seem likely to ink a new deal with him though, especially with the Los Angeles Lakers, who many expected to pursue Paul extensively, now intertwined with Russell Westbrook. A three year, 100-million dollar contract for Paul should please both sides, allowing the Suns to keep their superstar, and Paul to stuff his wallet a bit more before retiring.
But beyond that, the Suns do not need to dish out too much more cash this offseason to other free agents. Built around a young core, the Suns just need to further improve and develop their players like Deandre Ayton, Mikal Bridges, and Devin Booker going forward, rather than managing their budget to attract big names.
That is not to say that the this year’s free agent market carries zero value for the Suns, as bringing a few newcomers aboard could still assist the team. But still, Phoenix needs to be cautious of overspending.
Coinciding with that, the Suns need to avoid these three free agent options already tied to them this summer.
