Cameron Johnson
Grade: B
Stats: 8.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, 39.7 percent 3P shooting
James Jones and the Phoenix Suns reached in the 2019 draft and selected Cameron Johnson with the 11th pick overall. You can say all you want, but it was a reach. Still, the rookie’s performance would have made him look like a steal if he had gone in the late first-round, where he was largely projected to go.
Cam Johnson ended up being what we thought, a pure shooter and, yeah, that’s about it. A pure shooter. But if you’re going to be good at one thing in basketball, shooting is a pretty good one to pick.
Out of 325 total shots on the year, 229 of them were from behind the arc, leaving only 96 2-point attempts. One of those 2-pointers an out-of-nowhere dunk that made the Phoenix Suns top 5 plays of the year, so props to him for that.
He’s a rookie, so his grade is based on a rookie scale, but he proved many skeptics wrong. His elite shooting translated to the pro game and if it weren’t for some nagging injuries and, of all things, mononucleosis, he may have continued to improve.
In the end, it was a solid year for the rookie.
