Phoenix Suns fans are split between resuming basketball now and canceling the season in order to start fresh and on-time next season.

Here is the question: should the NBA cancel the rest of the 2019-2020 season and focus on starting next season on time, or should they do what they can to salvage this season, even if that means it seriously skews the calendar for the draft and the start of next season. Phoenix Suns fans slightly lean toward the former.

In a supremely scientific online Twitter poll on the Valley of the Suns account, we asked the fan base if they’d rather play some more games this season or call it over and (hopefully) start next season on schedule. One of the major determining factors is that if the NBA were to resume play this season, it would almost certainly push back the start of the 2020-2021 season. Some folks have guessed it would begin around Christmas.

I can’t help but then wonder what kind of domino effect that would have. Would next season be shortened to get back on schedule? Is a Christmas time start the new norm for the long haul?

There might be a creative compromise, but for the sake of simplicity, this is where we drew the line. Cancel and start next season on time or finish it out and delay next season. The results surprised me.

After almost 400 votes, 53% of responders say just cancel this season and plan on starting the next season on time. Kind of like the online solicitation for the top five moments in Phoenix Suns history, that is not exactly a consensus.

My assumption is Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks fans would feel differently. The fact that the Phoenix Suns are almost assuredly out of the playoffs (barring some type of out-of-the-box solution) doesn’t exactly give fans something to feel like they would miss out on by canceling the season, where the Lakers and Bucks, on the other hand, have championship aspirations. No doubt they want to play this season out.

The argument for the Phoenix Suns to want to play more games is simply to get this group more time together. With so many new faces this season, there was a lot of figuring each other out going on. More figuring out can only help.

Then again, with several players who may not return next season, how much value would a handful of games really provide?

I’m torn between wanting sports and normalcy back as soon as possible and wanting this to be over and the new normal is like the old normal in a few months. That is true for more things than just sports, but in this poll, lump me in with the 53% majority of Phoenix Suns fans.

It’s a credo Suns fans know well: chalk this one up to a loss and get ready for the next one.
