Backcourt Reserves
My backup guards make the team for me. When Nash and Booker need a break, you need guys who won’t let the team fall apart. At point guard, I have ’88-’89 Kevin Johnson.
KJ was a hyper-athletic playmaker who plays defense. Johnson averaged 20 points and 12 assists that season, earning him All-NBA 2nd team honors. Inserting Johnson’s scoring and playmaking with his will to play defense makes Nash resting during the game (or missing some games) not as big of a problem as it could be.
Now it is time for ’91-92 Dan Majerle at the backup 2-guard. Thunder Dan was a lights-out 3-point shooter (38 percent that season) who was also effective. On top of that, he loved playing defense. Majerle was selected to his first of two All-Star games that season and averaged 17 points per game, 5.9 rebounds, and 3 assists.
