The Phoenix Suns need a starting point guard and while Tyreke Evans may not be the flashiest name on the market, he would certainly fill the club’s need.

The Phoenix Suns went through multiple point guards during the regular season and didn’t come away with a clear answer for the long term. There are so many different ways and players that the franchise could choose to fill that need. One name that isn’t the most popular, but could definitely be the answer at the position is unrestricted free agent Tyreke Evans.

Adam Maynes also advocated about signing Evans this summer and the pro’s of adding him, in an article he wrote in the past. One of Maynes primary focuses was on the positives about having Evans play along side Suns star Devin Booker. While Evans’ fit with Booker is important, it’s not the only important aspect of adding him to the roster.

Evans has played all three perimeter positions throughout his career, but point guard is the position he has played the least amount at. For his career, he’s only played the point guard position about five percent of the time. However, it’s important to note that in his rookie year he played point guard 10 percent of the time and this past season, he played point guard 26 percent. It just so happens that those two seasons were the best of his career. If signed by the Suns, whoever the head coach is will have to start Evans at point guard because the franchise already has solid depth at the other perimeter positions. It stands to reason that if his two best seasons came when he only played a portion of his time on the court at the lead guard position, then playing him there full time should result in a career year for Evans.

Over his career, Evans has become a solid 3-point shooter and could help open up driving lanes for himself and other Suns’ players. He’s a veteran that can contribute at a high level, which is what the Suns’ need if they are to compete for a playoff spot next season. Evans would make an immediate impact based on his career averages of 16.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.3 steals.

The Phoenix Suns are in the market for a point guard and Tyreke Evans could be a low key addition that could have a big time impact. Coming to the Suns would allow Evans to be a full time lead guard for the first time in his career. It’s a union that could benefit both sides.
