Phoenix Suns roundtable: New Year’s resolutions
Adam Maynes
Josh Jackson
It is entirely unfair to expect more of Josh Jackson this season than what he is bringing, and to compare him to Jayson Tatum in any way is even more unfair and entirely useless conjecture. However, the fact remains that offensively Jackson is a liability and cannot be counted on as a regular scorer or ball-handler. His ability to be both and consistent would improve the offense tremendously. I have regularly compared Jackson to Shawn Marion, whose rookie season was statistically underwhelming. But Marion improved quickly and became the team’s leading scorer by his sophomore year. Jackson doesn’t need to take a leap in production this season, but improving both his shooting and ball-handling is something that can plausibly improve by some notable measurement this season, which should be a focus of his daily work.
Jay Triano
Just keep doing what you’re doing, brotha. I don’t know if Triano is the coach of the future, but he is the coach of the now. I really like the improvement of the team – it’s hard to not like what you’re seeing as a fan – and I don’t see any reason of changing or expecting anything more of Triano than who he has shown to be thus far: a good teacher, and a much better manager of talent than his bum of a predecessor.
Ryan McDonough

McDonough has a lot of detractors. I am not one of them. But, it is time for McDonough to make his career-defining trade. Whether it’s moving up in the draft and grabbing a top-3 pick (presuming that the Suns are not up there already), trading for a bonafide star or trading for a franchise-changing package akin to the Larry Nance trade of 1987, he needs to do something to put a giant smile on fan’s faces. Obviously this is easier written than done, but it needs to be done, the team needs to start winning next season, and it sure does seem that his future in Phoenix might depend on it. I would disagree with those who think that he should be fired, but I do believe that I am in the minority.

EXTEND DEVIN BOOKER NNNOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW. If Devin Booker is going to eventually get a max contract extension (which if you don’t think he will, you’re wrong), just give it to him nnnoooooowww. I say this for two reasons: first off, let BOOKER know that he is the future and that there is no hesitation that he is not only a cornerstone, but the face of the franchise moving forward. Also, let the LEAGUE know this as well. Let future free agents; stars around the league; very good role players; that if they come to the Suns, they will be playing alongside Devin Booker and that they will be a part of a core of players that – based on Booker’s age – will be together, and winning, for a very long time.
Oh yeah, and the fans want it done too.
