Phoenix Suns: One bold prediction about the point guard position
Even though the Phoenix Suns point guard position seems settled, fans could be in for a surprise when it comes to team’s back court situation.
Phoenix Suns fans should feel confident going into this season in regards to the depth and quality at the point guard position. Eric Bledsoe is a borderline All-Star, Tyler Ulis showed flashes of being a quality backup point guard last season, and Mike James is hard working as well as a high energy third string. As exciting as that is for the Suns fans, my bold prediction should get them even more hyped. My bold prediction is, at some point this season Devin Booker will take over the starting point guard responsibilities.

There are several ways this could come about. Bledsoe does not have a great history when it comes to injuries. Hoping not, but if Bledsoe does get hit with the injury bug again this season, then head coach Earl Watson may want to try the young shooting guard at a new position, based on Watson’s comments earlier this year. Another way Booker could see time as the starting point guard is if the team decides to tank and shut down their veterans like they did last year. It is very likely that one of these two scenarios happens, though I would much rather the one involving tanking to occur versing an injury. Lets face it, nobody wants or wishes an injury on a player.
Not too long ago, I wrote about the depth chart at point guard for the Suns going into the this season. In that article, I wrote about what Booker could bring to the team as a lead guard. He has the passing ability as well as the leadership skills to be a point guard. One stat I used in that post and will share again which will paint a clear picture of why Booker could be a starting point guard for the Suns. According to ESPN Split Stats, after the All-Star break last season he averaged 4.1 assist where as before the break he only averaged 3.2 assists. It may not be a huge uptick in stats, but it does show he has playmaking skills.

Phoenix Suns fans should be excited to see Booker start at point guard at some point this season. The question is not if, but rather when.
