Phoenix Suns: 5 Lessons From Preseason Opener
5. Archie The Odd Man Out?
Before the game, head coach Jeff Hornacek had this to say about his plans for the team’s rotations heading into the regular season: “We’ll try to get everybody in tonight, at least some minutes, and then gradually build up [the starters’ minutes] as we go on.”
Unfortunately, Archie Goodwin wasn’t really included on the receiving end of that extra playing time, finishing with three points, two assists and one steal in only seven minutes.

There wasn’t a lot Archie did wrong. He’s still not where he needs to be defensively, but he had a nice three-point play, he didn’t commit a single foul or turnover and he didn’t make any obvious mistakes when he was in the game. It’s just that Devin Booker was better.
From just watching the two play, you never would have guessed that Archie was the third-year player and Booker (six points in 24 minutes) was the rookie.
“We may take a look at some point at playing Sonny [Weems] or Deven even a little bit at the 3, just to try to get more minutes for Archie,” Hornacek said before the game.
The Suns did play Booker at the 3 last night, but it didn’t lead to any substantial playing time for Archie. For Goodwin’s sake, here’s hoping the Suns’ second preseason game provides him with more of an opportunity to prove himself.
