Could A Summer Suns Point Guard Earn A Training Camp Invite?

If you had to narrow your criticism of the Phoenix Suns over the last couple of years down to one main gripe, it’d be that this team has been overloaded with too many point guards. After general manager Ryan McDonough’s gamble on Isaiah Thomas led to three disgruntled point guards and a roster shakeup at the trade deadline, Suns fans were longingly remembering the days when Ish Smith was the team’s backup point guard.

But as NBA fringe players continue to fight for attention in the Las Vegas NBA Summer League, it’s hard to ignore that two of the three main players who have stood out in that category are point guards.

We’ve already covered one of those three players, Josh Harrellson, who undoubtedly deserves an invite to the Suns’ training camp as a big who can stretch the floor in a Papa Roach kind of bench role. But in the category of backup and even third string point guard, Phoenix is, ironically, short on floor generals.

After a more extensive taste of Summer League action, definitive statements can be made about the Summer Suns. And after Phoenix officially announced the signings of Mirza Teletovic, Sonny Weems and Ronnie Price yesterday, the Suns’ roster is starting to take shape for 2015-16.

Here’s a look at the four main prospects that are/were in the running for a backup point guard role on the Phoenix Suns next season.
