2. Bobby Portis

Anytime your NBA comparison is Kevin Garnett because of your intensity on the interior, you’re doing something right with your basketball career. Bobby Portis is a 6’11” power forward from Arkansas who always plays with a chip on his shoulder because of all the adversity he overcame as a young man (unstable housing, his mother being a victim of domestic abuse).

He’s about to be able to provide for himself and his family to put those troubles behind him.

Portis has received universal acclaim from his draft workouts with teams, showcasing his versatility, his inside-outside game and the competitive fire that carries him on both ends of the floor. Portis has the kind of energy the Suns would love to add, but like KG, his intensity doesn’t overshadow the high intellect and instinct that allows him to be so effective.

Though he’s not a great athlete, Portis’ size and 7’2″ wingspan help make up for it. He’s not as effective when he falls in love with the perimeter game, but if he can add a consistent three-point shot to his arsenal, he’s going to be one of the best “sure thing” picks in this draft.

From the Suns’ perspective, Portis will more than likely be available at No. 13. He charmed the Suns front office and media alike during his pre-draft workout, he was efficient from all three areas of the floor as a shooter in college and he’s an excellent rebounder. His upside might not be as high, but Phoenix could do much worse at No. 13 than Bobby Portis.
