Conclusion
Unless Devin Booker somehow falls to Phoenix at No. 13, three-point shooting will still be an area of need for the Suns by the time their No. 44 selection rolls around. If this is an area McDonough wants to address with a second round flier, Michael Frazier II will likely be somewhere near the top of his list (with Tyler Harvey likely being in that conversation as well).
Frazier has a long way to go to shed the perception that he’s a one-dimensional spot-up shooter, but that one dimension he brings to the table is a premium value in today’s NBA. The Suns aren’t going to be emulating the Golden State Warriors any time soon, but grabbing a shooter in the second round never hurts either.
That being said, drafting by need — even in the second round — only applies if there isn’t a clear answer to the “best player available” question. If a quality players slides to the Suns at No. 44, they’ll need to think twice about automatically taking a shooter, even if Frazier could bring a much-needed attribute to Phoenix.
