Conclusion

Assuming the Suns select at No. 13 and No. 44 as currently anticipated, taking a power forward/center like Frank Kaminsky, Myles Turner or Bobby Portis would make the need for another big superfluous. But if Devin Booker or some other promising prospect slides to No. 13, or if Phoenix trades up, there’s no way to say for certain that another big man is a bad idea at No. 44.

(To clarify, that proposed trade with the Knicks would have to be an under-the-table agreement that couldn’t be completed until after the draft since the NBA does not allow teams to trade their first round pick in back-to-back years, essentially saving the Knicks from themselves.)

In any event, there’s probably a reason the Suns scheduled a workout with Alan Williams, so we definitely can’t rule anything or anyone out until after the draft, when we know for certain where McDonough stands.

Williams will need to become a more mobile, versatile big, and it’s a little worrisome that his center skill set is trapped in a power forward’s body. But this massive individual knows how to rebound, he knows how to score in the post and he’d be a low-risk option for a team that currently needs frontcourt depth, so don’t count out the relatively unknown Alan Williams just yet.
