Conclusion

The Suns have plenty of options, and once you get outside the top 10, there’s a lot of room for variance between what actually happens and what the mock drafts predicted would happen. But there’s a reason no one has Harrell down as a lottery pick, and the Suns have done their due diligence this summer to know better than using their 13th pick on a guy who probably won’t be taken until the 20s.

If the Suns want a stretch-4, they’d be far better off going with Myles Turner, Bobby Portis or Kevon Looney, who all have more height and upside. And none of this takes into account what happens if someone like Cameron Payne or Frank Kaminsky is still on the board, since McDonough has said he’s not drafting by positional need.

Harrell is not a bad NBA prospect, he’s just not the right fit for the Suns unless they decide to trade down. His toughness would be a nice addition to Phoenix, but someone like Portis could add that toughness as well. Harrell doesn’t have NBA three-point range, he’s undersized and he’s already 21 years old.

In the right, winning environment, Harrell has the potential to thrive. ESPN’s Chad Ford lists the Washington Wizards, Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs as potential landing spots for him, which would be perfect for cultivating the best of his talents.

But the Suns haven’t built that kind of winning environment yet, so they need the best piece possible for a roster where no one is off limits. It’s nothing personal against Montrezl Harrell, but he’s simply not that player.
