Overview

As the 2015 NBA Draft approaches, we’ll be taking a look at the top prospects in this year’s class to gain a sense of what the Phoenix Suns should do with their pick. Today, we’ll be taking a look at Cameron Payne.

More from Suns News

A 6’2″ point guard out of Murray State, Payne is one of the best players at his position in the entire draft. He’s not quite in the same tier as prospects like D’Angelo Russell or Emmanuel Mudiay, but he’s an extremely well-rounded player who averaged 20.2 points, 6.0 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game in his sophomore season with the Racers.

Payne is a teensy bit older than an upside pick, but this 20-year-old can play. Most fans are expecting a power forward in this year’s draft, but the Suns also have a need at backup point guard after shipping away Goran Dragic, Isaiah Thomas and Tyler Ennis at the trade deadline.

Is Payne talented enough to warrant a selection that would be justified mostly by general manager Ryan McDonough’s commitment to drafting the best available player? Or should the Suns avoid yet another point guard? Here’s a look at Cameron Payne and his potential fit with the Suns.
