Conclusion:
Personally, I am a believer in Kelly Oubre Jr., and I think his best days of basketball will come at the NBA level, and not the college level, but it doesn’t seem likely that he will be headed to Phoenix.
Many mock drafts have him getting selected before the Suns pick at 13, but that isn’t the only factor at play. As I mentioned, the Suns have quite a bit invested in wings right now, and unless they feel Oubre is absolutely the player they want, they’d probably be better off going with one of the big men left on the board.
The other factor would be whether or not the Suns are willing to put in the time with another prospect who could take a few years to develop. After all, Oubre will contribute immediately with his rebounding and defense, but his shot could be a work in progress, and two of the players that spend time at the three position for the Suns have Oubre beat in at least one area.
At this point, T.J. Warren has a better feel for scoring than Oubre will in year one, and P.J. Tucker will still be a better defender at this point, meaning that it could be hard for Oubre to play his way onto the court, especially if the Suns are in contention for a playoff spot.
With all that being said I think Oubre would be a good pick for the right team, but I’m not convinced that team is Phoenix right now.
