Phoenix Suns: 10 Worst Draft Picks In Team History
1. William Bedford
Much like the Suns screwed up four consecutive drafts from 2004-07, they didn’t have a great string of luck from 1984-87 either. Completing the four-year run of crappy luck was the 1986 NBA Draft, when the Suns used their No. 6 pick on William Bedford, a seven-foot center out of Memphis who was projected to be a star.
Unfortunately, like Chris Washburn and Roy Tarpley who were in the same draft, Bedford struggled with drug addiction. He never reached his full potential, playing a grand total of six seasons in the NBA and averaging a majorly disappointing 4.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game for his career.
Pile on the fact that he only played in 50 games over the course of ONE season for the Suns and you’ve got a major disappointment for a top-10 pick.
Instead of a star, the Suns got a one-year rental in Bedford when they could have drafted guys like Ron Harper, Scott Skiles, Arvydas Sabonis, Mark Price or Dennis Rodman (though, to be fair, none of those guys were projected as top-10 picks).
So to recap, from 1984-87, the Suns could’ve (ideally) added Stockton, Malone, Pippen and one of the five guys listed above. Instead, they wound up with four players who spent five years or less in the Valley of the Sun.
The Suns thought they had a franchise center in Bedford. This was just one of those unlucky picks that really didn’t work out (and quickly). Unfortunately, it’s also the worst draft pick in Phoenix Suns franchise history.
