The Verdict:
No one should make the mistake of thinking trading for Enes Kanter is a game-changing move. Addition by subtraction in trading Isaiah Thomas feels ideal right about now, but Kanter’s not going to suddenly transform into an All-NBA player. Like many of the pieces on this team, Kanter is still young and needs time to develop.
With Len already looking like the future, it’s hard to see how the two would co-exist. Starting Kanter would mean Len’s monster potential would develop even more slowly and starting Len would probably lead to more unhappiness for Kanter.
If this is the best deal the Suns can work out to clear the backcourt logjam, then they should do it. Trading Isaiah Thomas would lead to more touches for Dragic, which would make it far more likely the Suns can re-sign him this summer.
However, I think Thomas has more value league-wide than a deal for Kanter, and Dragic easily has more value. This move makes the Suns a better team for their playoff pursuit this year and it strengthens them with another young piece, but it doesn’t quite maximize the trade value of IT or the Dragon.
It’s a very realistic deal that could definitely happen, but for the time being, my verdict is “no thanks.”
What say you, Suns fans? Would you like to see Enes Kanter in the purple and orange, and how would he fit?
