2011-12 Season Outlook: Warrick’s role on the Suns is as murky as ever. His playing time took a hit with the drafting of Markieff Morris, and in conjunction with the rise of Marcin Gortat that pushes Channing Frye into more duties at power forward, there’s not a lot of wiggle room for Alvin Gentry to find court time for Warrick.
Nonetheless, the 6-foot-9, 219 pound forward could be valuable insurance for Phoenix should injuries occur. Last season, Warrick showed that if anything, he can run the pick-and-roll with Steve Nash for a occasional monster dunk, but considering his rebounding deficiencies — he averaged 3.7 rebounds per game in 17.7 minutes — he’s not the type of big man that can cement a significant role on this team. After all, that’s what the Suns were searching for in Morris.
What you see is what you get with Warrick, and his PER ratings have been steady since his second year in the league. Should he earn 15 minutes a game, the Syracuse Orangeman could contribute a solid six-to-eight points, bring energy to the offense and produce some poster-worthy dunks. But unless he’s drastically improved his jump shot or has put on — and keeps on — some muscle, Warrick will have a tough time making a mark on this year’s team. — Kevin Zimmerman
Biography: Hakim Hanif Warrick (July 8, 1982) was a four-year standout at Syracuse University under coach Jim Boeheim and was an integral part of the 2003 NCAA Championship team, making a game-saving block with 1.5 seconds left. Warrick turned in quite the career as an Orangeman, averaging 15.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. The power forward finished second all-time at Syracuse in free throws made (529) and free throws attempted (803), third for consecutive double-figure scoring games (61) and fourth in points (2,073) and rebounds (1,025).
After four years at Syracuse, Warrick was drafted 19th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2005 NBA Draft. Warrick played 68 games as a rookie and participated in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest that season. He went on to play four years in Memphis, starting 82 games and averaging 10-plus points in three of the four seasons.
His rookie contract expired in 2009 and he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. After playing 48 games with Milwaukee, Warrick was traded with Joe Alexander to the Chicago Bulls for John Salmons. He played 28 games with the Bulls before entering free agency and ultimately agreeing to a four-year deal worth an estimated $18 million with the Phoenix Suns.
