Vasilije Micic next team after Suns is all but confirmed

His time in Phoenix could already be over.

One move the Phoenix Suns are expected to make this summer is declining Vasilije Micic's $8.1 million team option. If that happens, the 31-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent, paving the way for him to sign with another team that may not be in the NBA.

Micic told Eurohoops' Johnny Askounis that he doesn't know what will happen, but all he wants is to play. He added that he ignores the rumors about his future because, as for now, he's still under contract. The Suns will decide Micic's future by June 29.

Some of the rumors that Micic referred to probably pertained to the April report that he was "nearing a deal" with Hapoel Tel Aviv. That never happened. The guard finished the 2024-25 season in Phoenix after arriving in the desert as part of the Jusuf Nurkic trade. Micic played only five games for the Suns, averaging 4.2 minutes. He didn't attempt a shot in those contests, going scoreless.

Micic has likely already played his final game with the Suns because they need to create space financially. There is no reason to have his contract on the books, given that he spent most of the last few months of the season on the bench.

Suns have no reason to pick up Vasilije Micic's team option

Maybe Micic could finally join Hapoel Tel Aviv on a contract this summer if (more like when) the Suns decline his option. It's hard to envision another NBA team expressing interest in him after the way the last two seasons have gone for him.

The Sixers drafted Micic with the No. 52 overall pick in 2014. Philadelphia traded his draft rights to the Thunder in 2020. He signed a three-year deal with OKC before the 2023-24 season. He appeared in 30 games for the Thunder before he was traded to the Hornets. When the Suns traded for him, they knew his time with the team would be brief.

Micic's future is up in the air, but he does plan to represent Serbia at FIBA EuroBasket 2025 this summer after playing in the Olympics last year. The odds are that he'll remain overseas beyond then.
