The Phoenix Suns suddenly have an enviable point guard problem

Nobody can say they saw this one coming.

The Phoenix Suns have officially completed preseason play, going 3-1 across a pair of contests against the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets. The tune-up games being used excellently by head coach Jordan Ott to get a feel for this roster and his eventual rotations, even with two of his starters in Mark Williams and Jalen Green unavailable to him.

Despite this, a number of Suns put their hands up for more minutes once the action gets underway for real. Perhaps sensing that there is more depth in The Valley than previously thought, coach Ott rested all of his starters in the final preseason game against the Lakers, allowing his bench and trio of rookies to power the team to victory.

Suns now have two point guards who have proven they can start.

Perhaps the most important development since training camp opened - outside of rookie center Khaman Maluach appearing to be ahead of schedule - has been the Suns' apparent ability to add a pair of point guards to this roster who are both capable of being more than third-string. Right now Devin Booker is the starter, while backup Collin GIllespie has clearly made strides.

But coach Ott started both Jordan Goodwin and Jared Butler in the second win over the Lakers, and the results were incredibly encouraging. The overlap between their skill sets was evident, with neither getting in the other's way and both flourishing in different ways. Butler in particular is playing like a guy who knows his professional career is on the line, and he erupted for 35 points in the victory.

Goodwin ended up with 24, the two highest totals for the team. They also combined for 15 assists, while the rest of the starters had three. So although the conventional thinking had been that the Suns would eventually drop one of these two as their roster evolved, both are proving too valuable to let go.

They move the ball at the right times, while also knowing when to get their own. It is almost ironic that both players - but Butler in particular - look like the perfect foil to Booker out there. You could make the argument that not since Chris Paul has the 28-year-old had a point guard who is so capable of teeing him up and also playing off him while also scoring, and now two have come along.

With Jalen Green going to miss at least the first week or so with a hamstring issue, the front office did a brilliant job this offseason of ensuring there will be quality players to cover for him while he is gone. Goodwin was the known commodity who everybody knew could help if the team were short-handed, while Butler has been one of the finds of the summer. What a great problem to now have.
