The Phoenix Suns fell far short of the expectations set for them since trading for Kevin Durant. The 2024-25 season was the worst, with the Suns failing to secure a trip to the Play-In Tournament as the No. 11 seed in the West.
Phoenix has already made moves since the season ended by firing coach Mike Budenholzer. There has been considerable discussion about GM James Jones, as his contract is set to expire this offseason. A summer full of changes could mean Jones will be on his way out, too.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported that it is unclear whether Mat Ishbia wants to hire someone to work alongside Jones or replace him entirely and take over basketball operations (subscription required). That would no longer be a question if the Suns manage to do the unthinkable and persuade Bob Myers to go to the desert.
As Stein wrote, Phoenix's chances of doing so aren't high, but it can't be ruled out, at least not yet.
Bob Myers joining Suns' front office is a pipe dream
Myers was the Warriors' GM when they won four titles in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. He was named NBA Executive of the Year in 2015 and 2017. Myers decided to leave Golden State after 12 years because he felt like he could no longer give the job 100 percent, and wanted to pursue other opportunities.
The 50-year-old now works for ESPN as a studio analyst, and he also calls a few games. The Washington Commanders hired Myers as a consultant in January 2024. Stein reported that Myers enjoys working in both roles, decreasing the likelihood that he would want to return to front office life.
Stein did point out that Phoenix isn't too far from LA -- Myers' home. The Suns aren't the only team interested in Myers (so are the Hawks), but Phoenix has the advantage of being a short flight away from Southern California.
If Myers no longer felt like he was able to give what was needed in his role with the Warriors, it's hard to envision him taking on what seems like an impossible task with the Suns. He'd inherit a mess.
It doesn't hurt for Myers to know that Phoenix is interested, though. You have to shoot your shot, right? Even if it ends up being an airball.
