Suns truth bomb nobody wants to accept after drafting Khaman Maluach

Phoenix's roster may not be any better than it was before the Durant trade.

The Phoenix Suns certainly did not sit idle during Wednesday night's NBA Draft. But after they selected Khaman Maluach and acquired Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets, it's really not guaranteed that this team's roster is any better than it was before the Kevin Durant trade went down.

The blockbuster deal that sent Durant to Houston netted Phoenix Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks. But what it also did was ultimately leave the Suns with an unbalanced roster that is very heavy on shooting guards and centers. There's not nearly enough structure as there should be right now.

It's certainly not debatable that Phoenix currently has a lot of talent in the locker room, with Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks both bringing their own unique contributions to the table. Jalen is a high volume scorer that can produce points in a hurry. Brooks brings an element of tenacity on defense that's always going to be valuable for a team with high aspirations.

The Suns' roster has a lot of redundancy right now

On top of that, there's reason to be optimistic about both guys the Suns brought in on Wednesday night as well. Maluach has a very high long-term ceiling. Williams is going to offer a ton of length on the interior. But at the same time, this group of players doesn't necessarily make the most sense when groups together the way that they are right now.

Phoenix finds themselves with a bunch of players that are going to want the ball in their hands on the perimeter, or be operating very close to the basket in the frontcourt. They are severely lacking the type of wing players that can be connectors in between. Unfortunately, this is simply what happens when you go in the direction of trading away Kevin Durant.

It's obviously not like the Suns had much of a choice in the matter. But still, the roster concerns in terms of fit are pretty glaring right now for Phoenix. The best course of action going forward is going to be to consolidate what you have right now and try to find some semblance of balance positionally. There's still time for the Suns to make moves on the second night of the draft. It won't be easy, but they can still right this ship.
