Trey Murphy III of the New Orleans Pelicans is emerging as a player who is generating trade interest this offseason, with both the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers said to be interested.
They both can't land the sharpshooter who is also capable of having an impact on the defensive end, while new Pelicans' head coach Jamahl Mosley may opt to keep him to build around.
Grayson Allen can be a Plan B for teams looking to trade for Murphy III
The Suns can muscle their way into this conversation, and land some draft capital or a young player in the process, by offering up Grayson Allen as a viable backup plan. The 30-year-old having once led the league in 3-point shooting himself, while defensively he remains underrated.
His player profile, while a level below Murphy III's, is still exactly what the Pistons were missing in the playoffs. When the game slowed down and emerging players such as Daniss Jenkins (who the Suns should have a ton of interest in) went cold, Allen would have been the perfect solution.
The success of the New York Knicks has shown how the Eastern Conference is as open as ever, and the Pistons are close to breaking through to the NBA Finals. The Pacers were just there, and will be looking to bounce back quickly with Tyrese Haliburton (who somehow impacted our infamous 0-82 starting five) returning to the court.
There are only so many elite shooters on manageable contracts to go around, and Allen fits the bill.
The Suns would still have Royce O'Neale in town to soak up Allen's minutes, although they could also offer him up to another franchise that doesn't land either Murphy III or Allen.
It cannot be overstated enough how much more value the 25-year-old Murphy III has around the league right now, but only one team can land him. That kind of player being popular with contenders also means the Suns can drive up the price for their own version of him in Allen.
These are the clever ways the front office are going to have to enter into trade talks, because we know they won't be swinging for a star this summer. It may yet be that holding onto Allen until the deadline remains the move, when a whole new wave of desperation will have hit the rosters that haven't clicked.
This is a clear way for the front office to improve their long-term prospects around Devin Booker.
