While the entire NBA world was tuned into All-Star Saturday, with Devin Booker almost stealing the 3-point contest from Damian Lillard, the Phoenix Suns used up their final roster spot.
Shams Charania of ESPN taking to social media a night after appearing at the festivities in Los Angeles himself to announce that the franchise had signed forward Haywood Highsmith.
Highsmith the perfect buy low option for Phoenix
Although the news came out of nowhere, Highsmith was rumored to have suitors across several playoff bound teams, so the Suns securing him is a coup.
It might not be as splashy a name as Jeremy Sochan, who ultimately chose New York over The Valley, but the fit on paper looks like it makes more sense.
Highsmith last played for the Miami Heat, and although undersized to go against the biggest forwards in this league, that has never stopped him from bringing it defensively each night.
You can see that he will excel alongside Dillon Brooks, while he provides a different kind of cover when Grayson Allen is out injured.
Really though Highsmith could be the player who bridges the gap between Royce O'Neale and whatever direction the franchise go in future. This was just a move that many expected at the deadline, but it is better late than never.
General Manager Brian Gregory has quickly built up a huge amount of credit with the fans, and so they will believe that Highsmith was a guy worth bringing in based on that alone.
He's gotten it so right with Jordan Goodwin and Jamaree Bouyea, while converting Collin Gillespie to a full-time deal he can also take some credit for.
Then there is the Mark Williams trade, which although scary at the time has also paid off for the Suns this season. Transitioning away from Kevin Durant is hard, yet Gregory has not missed a step so far.
Even if Highsmith doesn't work out the Suns are still going to continue on this path, but he looks a clever addition. Another veteran who fits the culture of this group better than some who have been on the roster this season.
Nigel Hayes-Davis being the most recent example, and although he got paid to leave the NBA altogether, Highsmith is automatically an upgrade.
To add both him and Amir Coffey to the back end of a playoff chasing rotation is exactly how they get to the postseason, while also continuing to bring in players who make sense next to Booker.
