If there is one area the Phoenix Suns are most certainly set ahead of next season, it is the shooting guard position. They've got Devin Booker and his new extension leading the way, while Jalen Green is going to get an opportunity to show the Houston Rockets they were wrong to give up on him when they did.
Both Grayson Allen and Royce O'Neale are both currently on the roster, but it is likely at least one of them will be moved. Especially now that the Suns are out of both aprons having gotten rid of Bradley Beal. It is the point guard position that needs much more love, although the potential first Irish NBA player in history might be enticing to them at that spot.
Suns have to consider bringing in Amir Coffey.
Yet despite a clear logjam having already presented itself here, the Suns simply have to pick up the phone and call Amir Coffey. Although he is also a two-guard, the fact he is available at all at this point of the offseason speaks to how difficult it has become for a number of players to get paid. A situation that the front office are also keeping an eye on.
Coffey has a ton of experience having played well over 300 games for the L.A. Clippers, although he never could crack their rotation proper once the postseason started. Which is exactly where the Suns will not be going - really they'll be lucky to make the play-in - and why the 28-year-old veteran can help them on their regular season journey.
Situation is everything in the NBA. Amir Coffey is a 3 level scorer who is a victim of the analytic movement. Could drop 20 in his sleep. Absolute bucket pic.twitter.com/9rjwCCb0IO

Coffey would be over-qualified injury cover should something happen to either Booker or Green, while he can play the small forward position in certain lineups as well. Ryan Dunn likely has that spot locked up to begin the year, but we saw him go through his fair share of struggles as a rookie last season.
He's already a better defensive player with more size than Coffey, but having options is key in the league today. Offensively he's more versatile than both Allen and O'Neale, despite shooting a shade under 41 percent from deep last season on a career high 3.4 attempts each night. This isn't a role player slowing down, it is one ready to step into a bigger role.
Should the Suns also decide to flip Green if his value begins to trend upwards, then Coffey would be the ideal stand-in to get them through the rest of the season before going back to the drawing board. If the franchise wants to try Booker at the point guard position again - which they shouldn't but we know they will anyway - Coffey could take any minutes that Green couldn't alongside Booker.
At its most cynical, Coffey is the kind of guy who contenders love to add to their roster at the deadline. The Suns could do a lot worse than sign him up for next season, then flip him for a pick or another player at the deadline if the right offer comes knocking. That's just smart business, and it is what the front office should do with a player of his quality still sitting out there.
