Suns once ideal big man becomes available at wrong time for Phoenix

There are two areas that the Phoenix Suns have struggled to get right since breaking up the group that went to the 2021 NBA Finals. One of those is clearly the point guard position - and with Jalen Green rumored to be the solution in that area for 2025-26 - it is fair to wonder if that will fix a problem created when they traded away Chris Paul.

The other position of need is at the center, although the franchise have made meaningful strides this offseason to fix that. Nick Richards was the band-aid put over the problem at the trade deadline last season - and he may well be on his way out of Phoenix this summer - but both Mark Williams and Khaman Maluach are more long-term solutions.

Availability of Kevin Love comes years too late for Suns.

One intriguing big man who is likely to become available in the coming weeks is soon to be 37-year-old Kevin Love. The belief around the league that the former NBA Champion is looking to guarantee another spot in the league before being formally bought out by the Utah Jazz. Interesting as it is to consider Love in The Valley, this is a move that has come years too late for the Suns.

If Love had become available when Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal were in town, that would have been a different conversation. Even in a role off the bench behind Jusuf Nurkic, Love could have unlocked another level of the Suns offensively, although on the defensive end he wouldn't have changed much about how poor they've been in the last couple of years.

The Suns were in the second apron then as well, which would have made a move impossible, given they couldn't have gone after buyout guys as a result of their previous cap situation. But now that the organization has the ability to go after Love - creating a roster spot would be a lot less difficult too - it not longer has a need for him.

About the only argument you could make is Love being an excellent veteran who has seen it all for the likes of Maluach, Koby Brea and Rasheer Fleming. Even Ryan Dunn and Oso Ighodaro could learn a lot from a guy who has seen it all in this league. The veteran role is an argument you could make for a lot of players though, which is why it doesn't hold much weight.

Love is surely looking to add another ring to his resume as he career begins to wind down, and he wouldn't get the chance to do that in Phoenix next season either. He would actually play and have a defined role however, which is more than can be said for other teams surely in the hunt for his services. It's a case of right player, wrong time as the Suns rightly invest in their youth movement.
